Tazobactam Sodium Salt

Tazobactam Sodium Salt is a β -Lactamase inhibitor. It is an antibacterial penicillin derivative which inhibits the action of bacterial β-lactamases. It is used in combination with piperacillin and other β-lactam antibiotics to broaden their spectrum and enhance their effect. It is used for bacterial β-lactamase and penicillinase inhibition studies.

Tazobactam Sodium is the sodium salt form of tazobactam, a penicillanic acid sulfone derivative and beta-lactamase inhibitor with antibacterial activity. Tazobactam was discovered by Dr. R.G. Micetech at the University of Alberta in 1982. Tazobactam contains a beta-lactam ring and irreversibly binds to beta-lactamase at or near its active site. This protects other beta-lactam antibiotics from beta-lactamase catalysis. This drug is used in conjunction with beta-lactamase susceptible penicillins to treat infections caused by beta-lactamase producing organisms. Tazobactam alone showed an MIC of ≤ 8 mg/liter (range 2 to 32 mg/liter) against several Acinetobacter baumannii strains. Tazobactam in combination with piperacillin, successfully restored the activity of piperacillin against β-lactamase-producing bacteria. Tazobactam exhibited inhibitory activity and protected piperacillin against Richmond and Sykes types II, III, IV and V β-lactamases, staphylococcal penicillinase and extended-spectrum β-lactamases. Tazobactam showed species-specific activity against class I chromosomally-mediated enzymes.

In Microbiology,Tazobactam is frequently used in conjunction with Piperacillin as a disc in antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST).The disc diffusion method, which although developed in 1947 remains as the most widely used test. Performed with care, using adequate controls, it is as accurate as more costly and complicated tests. In common with all other methods it cannot mimic the in vivo environment but it does uniquely show the effect of a changing antimicrobial concentration (first rising and then falling) on an increasing microbial population. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the antimicrobial appears at the edge of the zone of inhibition which represents the interaction of a critical concentration of antimicrobial at a critical time on a critical microbial population2. The methods are simple but the interactions are very complex.
