Ribitol
Ribitol or adonitol is a crystalline pentose alcohol formed by the reduction of ribose. It occurs naturally in the plant Adonis vernalis, as well as in the cell walls of Gram positive bacteria. Adonitol is often compared to other cell permeating molecules such as formamide, propanediol, and DMSO as a cryopreservation agent.
Adonitol has also been used as an internal standard for the quantification of polyribosyl ribitol phosphate using high pH anion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC/PAD).
