Used in forensic science for latent fingerprinting. Oil Red O interacts with the fats and lipids in latent fingermarks and some greases to give a red/brown-coloured product. Oil Red O may be detrimental to subsequent fingermarks or forensic processing. It may develop addional marks when used after physical developer.
