Lactobionic Acid
Lactobionic acid is a sugar acid. It is a disaccharide formed from gluconic acid and galactose. It can be formed by oxidation of lactose. The carboxylate anion of lactobionic acid is known as lactobionate.
Lactobionic acid is often used in a solution called Viaspan. Viaspan was the trademark under which the University of Wisconsin cold storage solution (also known as University of Wisconsin solution or UW solution) was sold.UW solution was the first solution thoughtfully designed for use in organ transplantation. It was Developed in the late 1980s by Folkert Belzer and James Southard for pancreas preservation and soon replaced EuroCollins solution as the preferred medium for cold storage of livers and kidneys, as well as pancreas. University of Wisconsin cold storage solution remains what is often called the gold standard for organ preservation.
Lactobionic acid for skin. It is also used in cosmetics as an exfoliator. It is safer and better tolerated than its better known cousin glycolic acid, according to recent research. Both acids are part of the AHA family (alpha hydroxy acids) and have been used for many years in skin care formulations to exfoliate and help smooth the skin.
