Guanidine Carbonate
Guanidine was first synthesized in 1861 by the oxidative degradation of an aromatic natural product, guanine, isolated from Peruvian guano. The commercial route involves a two step process starting with the reaction of dicyandiamide with ammonium salts. It is a strong organic base.
The carbonate salt finds many uses in cosmetics and toiletries especially as a hair-straightener and hair relaxant (in Afro-ethnic hair) and as a depilatory cream.
