Glyphosate
Glyphosate, also known as N-(Phosphonomethyl)glycine, is a nonselective, broad-spectrum, perennial herbicide, employed at post-emergence stage for weed and vegetation control. It was originally marketed by Monsanto under the name Round-Up. This product is still available from Discovery for research purposes only.
Glyphosate inhibits the enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate 3-phosphate synthetase (EPS-PS) which is involved in the shikimate pathway. Inhibition of this enzyme results in an accumulation of shikimate, inhibition of synthesis of aromatic amino acids and secondary metabolites, and results in cell death.
