Denatonium Saccharide
Denatonium is a quaternary ammonium cation. It is a compound of a salt with an inert anion like benzoate or saccharide. It was discovered in 1958 during research on local anesthetics by MacFarlan Smith of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Denatonium saccharide is available under trade names such as BITTERANT-s.It is the most bitter chemical compound known, with bitterness thresholds of 0.01 ppm for the saccharide. It is used as an aversive agent (bitterant) to prevent inappropriate ingestion.In industry it is used to denature ethanol and in cosmetics it is used as an anti-nail biting agent in nail varnishes.
