Amphotericin B

Amphotericin B is an antifungal drug. It was originally extracted from Streptomyces nodosus, a filamentous bacterium, in 1955, at the Squibb Institute for Medical Research. Its name originates from the chemical’s amphoteric properties.
In Microbiology it is used as a component in Modified Listeria Selective Enrichment Supplement, A selective supplement containing Amphotericin B as a replacement for cycloheximide for the isolation of Listeria monocytogenes. It is also used in LCAT Selective Supplement (Lincomycin,Colistin Sulfate, Amphotericin and Trimethoprim). In Cell culture Amphotericin B is used for the prevention or elimination of fungal contaminants. It interferes with fungal membrane permeability by forming channels in the membranes and causing small molecules to leak out.

During the current Covid-19 outbreak the CDC and WHO have recommended Amphotericin B as one of the components that can be used in Viral Transport Media (VTM).
