4-(Dimethylamino) Benzaldehyde
Used in microbiology as a test reagent for the identification of indole-producing microorganisms. It is used to prepare Kovacs reagent (10 g 4-dimethylamino-benzaldehyde in 150 mL 1-pentanol plus 50 mL hydrochloric acid conc). For identification of an organism, the formation of Indole from a tryptophan substrate is a useful diagnostic tool. Indole production is a crucial test in identification of Escherichia coli. After incubation, adding the reagent will help determine if Indole has been produced. The reagent turns red when it reacts with Indole.
Analytical reagent for the determination of amino acids and peptides, amines, indoles, hydrazines and hydrogen peroxides; spray reagent for tryptophan; For the determination of tryptophan in proteins.
