2,3,5-Triphenyltetrazolium Chloride, TTC, or simply tetrazolium chloride (with the formula 2,3,5-triphenyl-2H-tetrazolium chloride) is a redox indicator commonly used in biochemical experiments especially to indicate cellular respiration. 2,3,5-Triphenyltetrazolium chloride is a colorless water-soluble dye. In the mitochondria of living cells, it is reduced to a deep red, water-insoluble compound (formazan). 2,3,5-Triphenyltetrazolium chloride helps to distinguish between viable and infarcted brain tissue after stroke

In agricultural and crop research, The TTC-test is commonly used to assess the viability of seeds that have failed to germinate. Tetrazolium salt stains all living tissue in the seed embryo red, thus enabling trained analysts to determine the seeds viability or otherwise. The tetrazolium test is used to give a quick  estimate of germination potential.
