β-Galactosidase
β-galactosidase, also called beta-gal or β-gal, is a glycoside hydrolase enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of β-galactosides into monosaccharides through the breaking of a glycosidic bond. β-galactosides include carbohydrates containing galactose where the glycosidic bond lies above the galactose molecule. β-Galactosidase is conjugated to an antibody which specifically recognizes a target molecule (enzyme immunoassay or EIA). β-Galactosidase is also used as a reporter enzyme to monitor the level of gene expression of a promoter. It may be used as a positive control protein with anti-β-galactosidase antibodies.
