Genistein is an angiogenesis inhibitor and a phytoestrogen and belongs to the category of isoflavones. Genistein was first isolated in 1899 from the dyer’s broom, Genista tinctoria; hence, the chemical name,Genistein. Today the main source of genistein is soybean. It is said to exhibit many health benefits and works on several fronts: it acts as a phytoestrogen, antioxidant, and potentially as an anti-cancer agent. It may alleviate the inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis.
