Esculin is a coumarin glucoside obtained from hydro alcohol extraction of flowering ash bark (Fraxinus ornus). Esculin is utilized in microbiology for the production of Bile Esculin Agar, a selective differential agar used to isolate and identify members of the genus Enterococcus, formerly part of the «group D streptococci».
